Hi, I’m Mel, a geographer and historian who loves dinosaurs, space, and nature! I am passionate about making science and history accessible to everyone, and I love sharing my knowledge with others, especially kids. I give talks to local libraries, organizations, and other venues, and I also write articles about science and history topics, which you can find here on my blog. My work has appeared in various places, like Prehistoric Times Magazine, GeekMom, and the New Worcester Spy, and I’ve been interviewed by news outlets like the Boston Globe, Spectrum News, and Worcester Magazine. I’ve presented my research at the annual meetings of the American Geographers Association and the National Council for Public History, as well as other conferences.
I’ve been a long-time member of the Aldrich Astronomical Society, one of the oldest astronomy clubs in the United States, and currently serve as their community outreach coordinator. I have also been a member of the Planetary Society for many years. In 2020, I received a NASA Space Grant, which I used to write a basic guide to astrophotography for beginners, encouraging citizen scientists to take part in the Planet Hunters TESS program. I am a NASA Solar System Ambassador, and travel to libraries around New England talking to the public about space. I volunteer at special events at Dinosaur State Park in Connecticut and other museums.
I am currently the associate editor at the Biographer’s International Organization, where I edit their monthly newsletter, The Biographer’s Craft. I am in the process of writing picture book and middle grade biographies of various historical figures for kids.
